Lapel Microphones or Headsets, which is better for my conference?

Choosing between an around-the-ear headset and a lapel microphone depends on your needs. Around-the-ear headsets have a microphone that stays close to your mouth, offering consistent, clear audio. They’re great for dynamic environments like stage performances, meetings, public speaking and fitness where movement is frequent. The microphone stays in place, ensuring a steady sound.

Lapel microphones, or lavaliers, clip to clothing and are more discreet. They're ideal for presentations, interviews, or video shoots where a subtle appearance is important. However, they can pick up more ambient noise, and the sound may vary with movement. Choose based on visibility, mobility, and audio consistency.

1. Design and Placement:

  • Around-the-Ear Headsets: These have a microphone attached to a band or wire that loops around the ear or sits on the head. The microphone is positioned near the user's mouth for consistent audio capture. They typically come with headphones or earbuds for monitoring sound.

  • Lapel Microphones (Lavalier): These are small, clip-on microphones usually attached to the user's clothing, typically on the lapel or collar. They are designed to be discreet and are placed farther from the mouth.

2. Audio Quality and Consistency:

  • Around-the-Ear Headsets: Since the microphone is close to the mouth, these provide more consistent sound quality, minimizing external noise and volume fluctuations due to head movement. They're ideal for situations where voice clarity is crucial (e.g., live broadcasting, conferences, instruction).

  • Lapel Microphones: Audio quality can vary more because the microphone is farther from the mouth and can pick up more ambient noise. The sound can also change if the person moves their head away from the mic. However, they still provide good clarity and are widely used in presentations and interviews.

3. Visibility:

  • Around-the-Ear Headsets: More visible because of the band and microphone placement near the face.

  • Lapel Microphones: Discreet and often preferred in situations where the microphone needs to be less noticeable (e.g., TV interviews, stage performances).

ShowPRO Productions stocks this equipment and provides Lapel Microphones and Headsets throughout the USA for various applications and supports such sound equipment in the field.
